Letter to Past Self

Letter-writing is a powerful way to process emotions and promote healing.  This is very much a personal exercise so don't worry about getting it 'right', there is no right or wrong.  It could be to your past self,  something you would like to say to a younger you at a time when you were struggling.  It could be what you would like to have said to a loved one who is no longer alive.  It could be to someone that you have unfinished business with, the things you would like to say but where the consequences would be too great.  Sometimes these are letters that we send, sometimes we keep, sometimes we burn.

If you need a little bit of guidance, follow these steps:

  1. Set Your Intention: Reflect on why you want to write this letter and what you hope to achieve.
  2. Choose a Timeframe: Decide which period of your past or present you want to focus on.
  3. Address Your Past Self or Loved one: Start the letter by addressing your past self or the person directly.
  4. Reflect on Key Events or Memories: Mention significant events or feelings you experienced during that time or are feeling now.
  5. Express your Feelings: Allow yourself to be honest—grief, love, regret, or gratitude. Everything is valid.
  6. Offer Wisdom and Comfort: Share insights or advice you wish you had known back then or now.
  7. Include Encouragement: Remind your past self of their strengths and potential.
  8. Finish on a Positive Note: Conclude with a message of hope and gratitude.
  9. Choose How to Keep the Letter – Some people keep their letters, place them somewhere meaningful, or even burn them as a symbolic gesture of release.
