One Chunk at a Time
How would you eat this bar of chocolate? Hint: One chunk at a time!

Sometimes we're so focused on a particular outcome or feel like we have so much to do that we become overwhelmed or paralysed and are unable to start. The molehill becomes a mountain and seems insurmountable. The idea of 'one chunk at a time' means breaking down that overwhelming challenge into small chunks that are easier to digest, more manageable if you like. We are more likely to complete smaller steps or chunks which creates a feeling of success, this means we feel more motivated to keep going and try new things because we've experienced that nice feeling of satisfaction. Here are some examples:
Breaking Down Difficulties:
- Identify the Challenge – Define the problem clearly.
- Divide into Steps – Break it into smaller, actionable tasks.
- Prioritize & Start – Focus on one step at a time.
- Celebrate Progress – Acknowledge each completed step.
- Adjust as Needed – Modify the approach based on experience.
Here's an example:
- Day 1 = Put rubbish into black bags
- Day 2 = Create 3 piles - things to keep, sell or giveaway
- Day 3 = Buy shelves for things I want to keep
- Day 4 = Sweep floor
- Day 5 = Assemble shelves
- Day 6 = Put things I want to keep on shelves
Reflect on the Experience – What went well? What could be improved?
Practice Self-Compassion – Be kind to yourself, regardless of how the strategy went.
Plan for Next Time – Use what you learned to make tweak your idea and makes improvements.
